2 Advent Monday
When humility delivers a man from attachment to his own works and his own reputation, he discovers that perfect joy is possible only when we have completely forgotten ourselves. And it is only when we pay no more attention to our own deeds and our own reputation and our own excellence that we are at last completely free to serve God in perfection for His own sake alone.
— Thomas Merton in New Seeds of Contemplation quoted in Seeds
Today: Merton speaks of humility in relationship to deeds, reputations and excellence. It seems to me that he is suggesting that perfect joy is possible when these aspects of humility are lost from within and directed toward God. One might say, “You gotta give it away in order to keep it.” Consider what giving your deeds, reputation and excellence to God might look like. What does is not look like?
