Advent 3 – Monday

Advent3 Monday

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise.

Psalm 84:1-4

For years I’ve heard people tell me they didn’t need to go to church to worship God.  I even had one fellow tell me he could worship God on the golf course. OK. That may be true.  But my first question is, “Do you really worship God while you’re playing golf ?”

But more importantly, this psalm speaks of the house of the LORD as a place where one finds comfort and refuge.  There is something very special about going to Mass each Sunday. You see, it doesn’t make you a Christian because you go to church any more than parking yourself in a garage makes you a car (Joyce Myers), but it is where we worship God the way we believe God has prescribed we do.

Can I worship God on the golf course?  Maybe.  But where the richness of worship is experienced is when we gather as the Body of Christ, living our lives together, connected to one another and “bearing one another’s burdens” and giving God thanks for all that he has done for us….well, there’s no sweeter place to be and once you’ve experienced that sort of worship, you will long for it when it’s not a part of your daily life.

May I challenge you?  This Advent, promise yourself you’ll return to Church. Get more involved in the life of your Church. Get involved in other people’s lives. It’s how God made us to live.
