Day 09 – Forty Days with Thomas Merton

Day 09

When humility delivers a man from attachment to his own works and his own reputation, he discovers that perfect joy is possible only when we have completely forgotten ourselves. And it is only when we pay no more attention to our own deeds and our own reputation and our own excellence that we are at last completely free to serve God in perfection for His own sake alone.

— Thomas Merton in New Seeds of Contemplation quoted in Seeds

Today: Merton speaks of humility in relationship to deeds, reputations and excellence. It seems to me that he is suggesting that perfect joy is possible when these aspects of humility are lost from within and directed toward God. One might say, “You gotta give it away in order to keep it.” Consider what giving your deeds, reputation and excellence to God might look like. What does is not look like?

One Response to Day 09 – Forty Days with Thomas Merton

  1. Barbara says:

LOL….These words again that I can not acquaint with myself. Giving my deeds to God looks like praying every day to Him, and asking Him to guide me in decisions that will affect other people. After all it is all in His hands and He will have the last word.
I think it does not look like letting people think that I am the reason for good things that happen from my decisions, or that I would be able to ever do any of the things I do without God waking me up and letting me know that this IS where I should be.
